Residents of Agavenya, the Mount Mary College of Education community, Takper and other surrounding areas in Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality have petitioned the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to intervene in an ongoing water crisis affecting the communities.
The residents say hundreds of households have been without potable water for several weeks after a major water pipeline supplying the area was damaged by a contractor working on the Adjikpo-Asitey section of the Somanya-Kpong road project.
The delay in repairing the damaged pipeline has forced some residents to rely on water from the untreated Onuma Stream, which flows from Adjikpo through Agavenya and Sawyer to the Mount Mary College of Education junction.
However, some residents have raised concerns about the safety of the stream water, citing pollution from open drains connected to the water body and activities involving animals along its course.
Those unwilling to use the untreated stream water have resorted to buying borehole water from tanker operators at costs ranging between GH¢250 and GH¢300.
The residents say the situation has placed a significant financial burden on households and is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
Information available indicates that repair works on the damaged pipeline have stalled because the contractor responsible for the damage has not yet provided funds to restore the facility.
Some affected residents told Channel One TV that the water shortage has affected households, educational institutions, businesses and other establishments in the area, forcing many people to travel long distances daily in search of alternative water sources.
They are therefore calling on the PURC and relevant authorities to intervene urgently to restore regular water supply to the affected communities.
