The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding clarity from the government on how it intends to finance the temporary GH¢2 per litre reduction in diesel prices.

The party is seeking details on the specific margins, levies and taxes being adjusted to fund the intervention, as well as the expected impact on government revenue.

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, raised the concerns at a press briefing on Wednesday, August 5, questioning the sustainability and financing arrangements of the policy.

“We therefore put the following questions to the government: which specific margins, levies or taxes are being reduced to finance the two cedis diesel relief and what is the total revenue loss?” he asked.

Mr Aboagye also questioned whether the intervention was provided for in the 2026 Budget and what measures the government intends to implement to address any resulting revenue shortfall.

He further called for clarity on how the reduction in diesel prices would translate into lower transport fares and reduced prices of essential goods and services.

The NPP lawmaker also sought answers on the status of the GH¢1 per litre levy, asking whether it would remain unchanged during the relief period and whether costs previously passed on to consumers would be refunded.

His comments come after President John Dramani Mahama directed a temporary GH¢2 per litre reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel as part of measures to cushion consumers against rising fuel prices.

The intervention took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and is expected to remain in force for one month unless reviewed by the government.

The relief applies only to diesel, with no corresponding reduction announced for petrol.
