The Deputy Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, has cautioned Ghanaians against celebrating the suspension of the proposed 30% transport fare increase, saying the decision will only be sustained if fuel prices and other operational costs continue to decline.
The planned fare adjustment was suspended after engagements between transport operators, including the GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other stakeholders.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Amoah welcomed the decision but stressed that it should not be seen as a permanent solution to the challenges facing the transport sector.
“The planned 30% increment was suspended following an engagement with the relevant stakeholders, including the GRTCC and GPRTU,” he said.
He acknowledged that commuters would be relieved by the development but warned that several factors, particularly fuel prices and vehicle maintenance costs, continue to influence transport fares.
“It is good news, but we should not be too excited,” he stated.
Mr Amoah said the sustainability of the suspension depends on whether operational costs remain stable or reduce further.
“We should pray that God helps us and things stabilise, and that fuel prices and the other components we use for our work reduce further,” he added.
He explained that if fuel prices and other expenses associated with running commercial vehicles continue to fall, transport operators would have no reason to consider another fare increase.
“If that happens, then there will be no plans to increase transport fares,” he said.
Mr Amoah expressed hope that the current stability in the sector would be maintained to reduce pressure on both transport operators and commuters.
