The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has arrested several commercial drivers operating at the Kingsway lorry station in Accra for allegedly charging passengers unauthorised transport fares.
The arrests were carried out by the Assembly’s taskforce during an enforcement exercise aimed at ensuring compliance with approved public transport fares and protecting commuters from arbitrary price increases.
According to the AMA, the operation followed complaints from passengers that some commercial drivers, popularly known as trotro drivers, had increased fares without approval from the appropriate authorities.
The taskforce moved to the Kingsway transport terminal, where several drivers were apprehended for allegedly flouting the approved fare structure.
The Assembly noted that transport fares can only be adjusted after consultations and approval by the relevant regulatory bodies and transport unions, warning that unilateral fare increments constitute a violation of existing directives.
AMA officials further cautioned commercial drivers against taking advantage of passengers by imposing arbitrary charges, stressing that offenders will continue to face sanctions.
The Assembly urged commuters to report drivers who charge unapproved fares to the appropriate authorities to facilitate prompt enforcement action.
