A 40-year-old man has been killed at Akyem Batabi in the Asene Manso Akroso District of the Eastern Region after he allegedly attempted to rape a 35-year-old woman.
The deceased, identified as Yaw Nyarko, was allegedly attacked by the woman’s 28-year-old brother, Bismarck Gbafa, who is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
According to preliminary accounts, the incident occurred on Monday when the victim, Celina Gbafa, returned home from her farm in a distressed state and reported the alleged attack to her brother.
Celina claimed that Nyarko attacked her from behind with a stick while she was returning from the farm before allegedly attempting to sexually assault her.
She alleged that a struggle ensued after both of them fell to the ground along with her farm produce. During the confrontation, she claimed the suspect seized her cutlass and threatened to kill her after she resisted his alleged attempt to rape her.
She managed to escape and reported the incident to her brother.
Police say Bismarck Gbafa allegedly armed himself with a machete, pursued Nyarko into a nearby bush where he was reportedly hiding, and attacked him. Nyarko sustained fatal injuries.
Following the incident, Bismarck reportedly surrendered himself to the Akyem Oda Police and has since been detained to assist with investigations.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Akyem Oda Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding both the alleged attempted rape and the subsequent killing.
