The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that a controlled spillage from the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso could begin on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, if the reservoir reaches its maximum operating level.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 4, the Commission said it had received an update from SONABEL, the operators of the Bagré Dam, indicating that the reservoir’s water level stood at 232.93 metres as of August 4, representing a filling rate of 62.77%.
According to the WRC, SONABEL intends to commence controlled water spillage if the water level rises to 234.00 metres.
The Commission has therefore urged residents in communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas to remain alert and take the necessary precautions ahead of the anticipated spillage.
It advised affected communities to strictly follow safety directives issued by their respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as other relevant state agencies responsible for disaster preparedness and emergency response.
The WRC said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
Controlled spillage from the Bagré Dam is carried out periodically to protect the structural integrity of the dam during periods of rising water levels, but it can result in increased water levels downstream, affecting communities along the White Volta Basin in Ghana.
