The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), has conducted a special registration and renewal exercise for flood victims in Tema Manhean.
The two-day exercise, held from July 20 to 21, 2026, was organised by the NHIS Tema East District Office within the Homowo Electoral Area to help residents affected by the recent floods regain access to healthcare services without financial difficulties.
The intervention formed part of efforts by the institutions to support vulnerable communities impacted by the flooding and ensure that affected households remain covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Speaking to residents during the exercise, the NHIS Tema East District Manager, Ms. Kafui Aku Gunu, said the collaboration with NADMO reflected the commitment of stakeholders to protecting the health and wellbeing of citizens, especially during periods of crisis.
She encouraged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to renew their memberships and remain active on the NHIS to access available healthcare services.
The Assembly Member for the Homowo Electoral Area, Enock Afutu Kotei, praised the NHIA and NADMO for the timely support, describing the initiative as a critical intervention for families still recovering from the impact of the floods.
He also urged residents to adopt proper sanitation practices, particularly by keeping drains free from refuse, to help reduce the risk of future flooding.
As part of the outreach, residents were educated on the benefits of the NHIS, the importance of maintaining active membership and the range of medical services covered under the scheme.
The exercise recorded a significant turnout, with many flood victims and community members taking advantage of the opportunity to register or renew their memberships.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the intervention, describing it as timely and necessary, especially as several families continue efforts to rebuild their lives after the floods.
