The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the government has allocated GH¢50 million through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to support infrastructure development at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) campus at Kenyasi No. 2 in the Ahafo Region.
The Minister made the announcement during the commissioning of the newly constructed UMaT campus, funded by the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF).
According to Mr. Iddrisu, the funds, expected to be released in 2027, will be used to construct a modern administration block and student dormitories to enhance teaching, learning and the overall operation of the campus.
He also disclosed that the government is committed to establishing a fully-fledged public university in the Ahafo Region before the end of President John Dramani Mahama’s current term in 2028.
“The government remains committed to expanding access to tertiary education, and the establishment of a fully-fledged university in the Ahafo Region is part of that vision,” he said.
As part of his visit to the region, the Education Minister also toured OLA Girls’ Senior High School, where he inspected ongoing infrastructure challenges.
He assured the school that abandoned GETFund projects, including classroom blocks, laboratory facilities and other educational infrastructure, would be completed as a matter of urgency to improve teaching and learning.
Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, called on residents and traditional leaders to support the government’s development agenda.
She praised the establishment of the UMaT campus and said the current administration had demonstrated its commitment to expanding educational opportunities in the region.
Ms. Gardiner further noted that the campus had secured accreditation under the current administration, arguing that the achievement reflected the government’s commitment to educational development in the Ahafo Region.
