Supporters and delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency have thronged the Kasoa Divisional Police Command following the alleged arrest of the party’s Zongo Ward Youth Organiser.
The incident is said to have occurred after the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo, allegedly ordered the arrest of the youth organizer over comments considered offensive.
According to the aggrieved delegates and supporters, the youth organiser committed no offence but only expressed his opinion that they would vote the MP out during the party’s upcoming internal elections.
The supporters accused the MP of allegedly using the police to intimidate and silence party executives and members who criticise her or demand accountability.
They further argued that during the tenure of former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, no arrests were made despite criticisms and offensive remarks directed at her by some NDC supporters while the party was in opposition.
They questioned why similar actions were now allegedly being taken against members of their own party.
The supporters maintained that party members should be allowed to freely express their opinions, especially as the NDC prepares for its internal elections.
Meanwhile, the NDC Constituency Secretary, Oteng Pabi, has appealed for calm among party supporters.
He said he did not understand why party members were allegedly being arrested and harassed, but assured supporters that the constituency executives would engage the appropriate authorities to resolve the matter.
