Ghanaian reggae and dancehall artiste Sugar Ranking The Rabbi has explained the reason behind his prolonged absence from the music scene, revealing that he spent the last 13 years serving in the Ghana Armed Forces.
Speaking in an interview, the musician disclosed that he put his promising music career on hold after joining the military, where he rose through the ranks to become a commissioned officer.
According to Sugar Ranking, his military career demanded his full attention, leaving little room to pursue music publicly.
He explained that regulations of the Ghana Armed Forces at the time did not permit serving military officers to perform publicly as musicians, forcing him to step away from the spotlight.
Despite already making a name for himself in the industry, Sugar Ranking said choosing the military over music was an easy decision.
The artiste, who rose to prominence at a young age alongside acts such as Castro, Yogi Dogi and Sonny Badu, said he has no regrets about exchanging the microphone for a military uniform.
Although fans rarely saw him on stage during that period, he insisted he never abandoned music entirely. Instead, he continued writing songs, refining his craft and preparing for the day he would return.
Having completed 13 years of service, Sugar Ranking said he has now exited the military and is fully focused on rebuilding his music career.
“I served for 13 years. I’m out now, and I went back for my microphone because that’s what I do best,” he said.
Beyond making music again, the reggae artiste said he is determined to use his experience to guide and mentor emerging talents while creating songs that inspire and positively impact society.
His revelation finally puts to rest years of speculation surrounding his disappearance from Ghana’s music scene and signals the beginning of what he hopes will be a successful new chapter in his career.
