A 43-year-old woman, Camila Alhassan, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour by the Accra Circuit Court after she was convicted of offensive conduct for publishing abusive content on social media targeting President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 17, the Ghana Police Service said the convict was arrested on July 9, 2026, through an intelligence-led operation after officers intercepted a TikTok video in which she allegedly made offensive, insulting and derogatory remarks about the President and the First Lady.

According to the Police, the video also contained threats against their lives and false allegations concerning the President’s private life, which authorities said could disturb public peace and undermine national cohesion.

Following investigations, Camila Alhassan was charged with Offensive Conduct and False Communication and arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court.

The Police said sentencing was initially delayed after the accused claimed she was pregnant. However, a medical examination conducted at the Police Hospital established that she was not pregnant.

She was subsequently sentenced on July 16, 2026, to one year imprisonment with hard labour for the offence of Offensive Conduct.

The Police further disclosed that arrangements are being made to prosecute her separately before the High Court on the charge of False Communication under the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).

The Ghana Police Service reminded the public that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the right must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

It also cautioned against using social media to spread false information, issue threats or publish unlawful content, stressing that persons who engage in criminal conduct online will face the full force of the law.
