The Weija Children’s Hospital is set to open to the public following a successful agreement brokered by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) between the Ministry of Health and Awerco Construction Limited for the immediate handover of the facility.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, EOCO said the agreement followed a series of engagements with the parties, who have agreed to hand over the hospital to the Ministry of Health to facilitate the commencement of healthcare services for the benefit of the public.

According to EOCO, the agreement was reached despite outstanding issues surrounding the project, including claims by the contractor over unpaid sums and concerns raised by the project’s financier regarding procurement processes and other related matters.

The Office explained that, in the interest of the public and to ensure the completed facility begins serving its intended purpose, all parties agreed that the hospital should be handed over and operationalised without further delay.

EOCO expressed optimism that the agreement would pave the way for the commissioning and opening of the hospital, allowing children and families to access much-needed specialised healthcare services.

The anti-graft agency, however, stressed that investigations into allegations of procurement breaches, financial impropriety and other related matters concerning the project remain ongoing.

It emphasised that the decision to hand over and operationalise the hospital would not affect or prejudice the investigations currently being conducted into the project.

EOCO commended the Ministry of Health and Awerco Construction Limited for placing the national interest first and cooperating to reach the agreement.

The Office reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public resources, promoting accountability and ensuring that public infrastructure projects deliver their intended benefits to the people of Ghana.
