The wife of late 2023 Ghana’s Strongest champion, Godfred Akobila, has opened up about the athlete’s final hours, revealing that he died after a brief illness despite initially appearing to recover.

Speaking after his death was announced on Tuesday, July 14, she said Akobila first complained of feeling feverish and was given medication at home.

According to her, the former Ghana’s Strongest champion refused to visit the hospital as he believed rest and first-aid medications would help improve his condition.

She explained that by the following morning, he appeared to be doing well and even indicated that he was feeling better. However, his condition reportedly deteriorated later in the evening as he began experiencing severe pain.

As the pain intensified, she said he started groaning and became increasingly weak.

In the early hours of the following day, Akobila reportedly told his wife that he could no longer endure the pain and asked to be rushed to the hospital. Before they could leave, he reportedly collapsed.

His wife said family members immediately poured water on him and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), after which he briefly regained consciousness.

He was subsequently transported to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival at about 3:00 a.m.

Prior to his demise, she indicated that the strength athlete had not been battling any known chronic illness and only experienced what appeared to be a sudden, short-lived sickness.

She described him as someone who rarely fell ill, and attributed his good health to his active lifestyle and years of physical training.

In view of this, Akobila’s sudden passing has left Ghana’s sporting fraternity in shock, with tributes continuing to pour in for the former champion.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years and three children, aged 12, 7 and 4.
