Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi believes Ghana would benefit from retaining Carlos Queiroz as head coach despite the uncertainty surrounding the Portuguese tactician’s future.

Queiroz, 73, was appointed in April on a short-term contract after Otto Addo was relieved of his duties in March, taking charge of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Questions over the veteran coach’s future have intensified in recent days following a social media post that appeared to suggest he had stepped down from his role.

However, Queiroz later clarified in a widely circulated interview that he had not resigned and remains in charge of the national team.

Ati Zigi, who featured in two matches under Queiroz during Ghana’s World Cup campaign, said he was unaware of the details surrounding the coach’s contract but believes keeping him as head coach would be a positive decision.

“I don’t know about his contract situation, but I feel he is a great coach, and I love how he brought about the positivity in camp. But if the leadership wants him to stay, it will be a good decision,” he told Sporty FM.

Under Queiroz, the Black Stars made a promising start to their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, defeating Panama 1-0 in their opening Group L fixture before securing a goalless draw against England.

Ghana’s hopes of finishing top of the group were affected by a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match, although the result was enough to send them through to the knockout stage.

The Black Stars’ campaign eventually ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal.

With the World Cup campaign now over, Ghana will turn attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Somalia and Rwanda as they seek to secure qualification for the continental tournament.
