Ghana Athletics unveils 13-member squad for 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Ghana Athletics, in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), has announced a 13-member team that will represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The prestigious multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026, with Team Ghana hoping to build on recent performances at continental and international competitions.

According to a statement issued by Ghana Athletics, the selected squad features a blend of experienced international competitors and emerging talents, reflecting the association’s commitment to athlete development and long-term success.

“The Commonwealth Games provide a unique opportunity for Ghana’s athletes to compete against some of the best competitors from across the Commonwealth while showcasing the country’s growing strength in athletics,” the statement said.

Ghana Athletics added that Team Ghana enters the competition with confidence and determination as it seeks to make a strong impact in Glasgow.

The 13 athletes selected for the Games are:

  • Deborah Acheampong – Women’s 100m, 4x100m relay
  • Anita Afrifa – Women’s 200m, 4x100m relay
  • Evonne Britton – Women’s 100m hurdles, 4x100m relay
  • Rose Yeboah – Women’s High Jump
  • Joseph Amoah – Men’s 200m, 4x100m relay
  • Benjamin Azamati – Men’s 100m, 4x100m relay
  • Mustapha Bokpin – Men’s 200m, 4x100m relay
  • Isaac Botsio – Men’s 100m, 4x100m relay
  • Mammoudu Baba Seidu – Men’s 400m hurdles
  • Abdul-Rasheed Saminu – Men’s 100m, 4x100m relay
  • Abigail Abugire – Women’s 800m
  • Lovina Ewusi – Women’s 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay
  • James Dadzie – Men’s 200m, 4x100m relay

Several members of the squad head to Glasgow in impressive form after recording strong performances during the 2026 season, including national records and personal bests across sprint, hurdles, middle-distance and field events.

Rigorous selection process

Ghana Athletics noted that the athletes earned their places following a demanding qualification process, with performances at national trials and recent competitions forming the basis of selection.

“The selected athletes underwent a rigorous qualification process, demonstrating outstanding performances during national trials and recent competitions. Their inclusion reflects not only their athletic prowess but also their commitment to hard work and discipline,” the statement added.

The governing body expressed confidence that the team possesses the quality to compete strongly against some of the Commonwealth’s top athletes.

Call for national support

As preparations intensify ahead of the Games, Ghana Athletics has called on Ghanaians to rally behind Team Ghana throughout the competition.

“The entire nation is encouraged to rally behind Team Ghana as they compete for glory and continue Ghana’s proud tradition at the Commonwealth Games,” the release concluded.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will present another opportunity for Ghana’s athletes to showcase their abilities on the international stage while pursuing medals against elite competitors from across the Commonwealth.
