Tensions have reached a boiling point in the Assin South Constituency as grassroots members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) move to challenge what they describe as “deliberate attempts” by certain party members and national-level actors to undermine the constituency’s internal electoral process.

In a press release, the group led by convener David Kwabena Marfo expressed deep concern over a series of actions they believe threaten the peace and unity of the constituency, which is currently the only NPP-held seat in the stretch between Adansi Asokwa and Takoradi.

The controversy stems from the conduct of eight specific individuals: Robert Oppong Amoateng, Mark Dankwah, Kofi Serebour, Frank Owusu, Samuel Sackey, Theophilus Essuman Amoakoh, Awo Asuamaa, and Enoch Botchway.

According to the grassroots group, these individuals bypassed established party protocols by submitting nomination forms to the regional level rather than the constituency elections committee.

The group also highlighted boycotting the official vetting process and failure to utilize the formal appeal process after their names were omitted from the official Notice of Poll.

The situation intensified on July 6, 2026, when two contradictory letters surfaced from the office of the Acting National Chairman.

One letter ordered a suspension of the Assin South elections, while the other reportedly cleared the aforementioned individuals to contest.

The crisis deepened on July 7 when some of these cleared candidates filed for an interlocutory injunction against the elections.

The grassroots group questioned the logic of this legal action, asking, “If these individuals had been cleared to contest, what necessitated the resort to court?”

Citing Article 4(2) of the NPP Constitution, which mandates loyalty and adherence to internal dispute-resolution mechanisms, the grassroots are demanding immediate intervention from the National Executive Committee (NEC), the Steering Committee, and the General Secretary.

Their primary demands include nullifying the contradictory letters issued by the national office, upholding the original Notice of Poll produced by the Constituency Elections Committee, ending “meddling” by national-level actors in local constituency affairs and resuming the elections within days to restore stability.

Enforcing party discipline against those found to have acted in bad faith.

The statement concluded with a stern reminder that the strength of the NPP lies in its respect for internal democracy.

The group has called on all party faithful to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting a resolution from national leadership.
