The Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey, has issued a strong warning to residents engaging in indiscriminate waste dumping, declaring that anyone caught will face the full rigour of the law without any interference or pleas on their behalf.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Allotey announced that two people arrested for illegally dumping rubbish will be arraigned before court as part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) intensified crackdown on sanitation offenders.
“We have started arresting people,” he said.
He recounted how he personally apprehended two individuals on Sunday while driving around the city with his driver.
“On Sunday, I didn’t go to church, and while moving around town with my driver, we arrested two people who were dumping rubbish from a tricycle. We will arraign them before court,” he stated.
The Mayor expressed deep frustration over the behaviour of some tricycle riders who collect waste from households only to dump it on the streets late at night.
“That is the mindset of some Ghanaians. Some tricycle riders collect rubbish from homes and, around 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., dump it on the roads,” he lamented.
Emphasising the Assembly’s no-nonsense approach, Mayor Allotey revealed that he has personally joined a taskforce established to tackle illegal waste dumping.
“When we get hold of you, nobody will come to plead for you. We will deal with you as we should. You will face the full rigour of the law,” he warned.
He cited the Avenor stretch as an example, saying the AMA had cleared all the rubbish there, only for someone to dump refuse at the same location again that morning.
“We have cleared rubbish in various parts of Accra, but people go back to dump refuse. We will stop that behaviour,” the Mayor declared.
