Three arrested as police uncover 50,000 rounds of ammunition near Wa

The Upper West Regional Police Command has intercepted a large consignment of ammunition being transported through an unapproved route outside Wa, leading to the arrest of three suspects.

The operation, carried out on Monday, June 29, 2026, resulted in the discovery of 200 boxes of AA cartridges, amounting to about 50,000 rounds, concealed beneath other goods in a commercial vehicle.

The ammunition was found during a search of the vehicle, which was flagged as part of ongoing security checks in the region.

Three individuals identified as Alhassan Issahaku, Iddrisu Mashood, and Alhaji Issahaku, who were linked to the transportation of the consignment, were arrested to assist with investigations.

The suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue to determine the source of the ammunition and identify other individuals who may be connected to the operation.

The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the officers involved in the interception, describing the operation as professional and intelligence-led.

Authorities say the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property while maintaining peace and security in the region, and have urged the public to support ongoing efforts by providing timely and credible information to assist in fighting crime.
