The Paramount Queenmother of the Osudoku Traditional Area, Manye Amponsah Dokua III, has attributed the recurring flooding in Accra and other parts of Ghana to widespread indiscipline, the construction of buildings on waterways, indiscriminate disposal of refuse, poor drainage systems, and corruption in the execution of public infrastructure projects.
According to the Queenmother, many people continue to disregard planning regulations by building on waterways and dumping refuse into drains, obstructing the free flow of rainwater and worsening flooding during heavy downpours.
She also blamed corruption in the award and execution of public contracts, alleging that a significant portion of funds allocated for infrastructure projects is lost before reaching contractors.
As a result, she said, contractors are often left with inadequate resources to deliver quality drainage and flood control systems.
Manye Amponsah Dokua III stressed that addressing Ghana’s flooding challenge requires discipline from citizens, strict enforcement of building and sanitation regulations, greater transparency in public procurement, and sustained investment in durable drainage infrastructure.
She expressed her deepest sympathies to families who have lost loved ones in the recent floods and encouraged those who have lost homes, businesses, and other properties to remain hopeful during this difficult period.
The Queenmother added that Ghana can overcome its flooding challenges, noting that many countries have successfully tackled similar problems through discipline, effective urban planning, and sustained investment in resilient infrastructure.
