The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has recently given mattress manufacturing companies that shut down for producing substandard products a one-month deadline to recall all affected mattresses from the Ghanaian market.
Speaking to the media, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Authority, Clement Kubati, said the affected companies had been formally directed to withdraw their products, warning that failure to comply would attract stricter enforcement action.
“The mattress issue, I’m sure some of you have asked. What I can say for the mattresses for now is that we have written to all the mattress manufacturing companies that we have locked down to do a product recall. We’ve given them one-month notice to do that,” he stated.
Mr Kubati assured the public that the Authority remains vigilant and committed to protecting consumers from unsafe and substandard products.
“I’m using this opportunity to send a signal to Ghanaians that we have not gone to sleep. We are still on the ground, and we are monitoring. We promote trade to protect consumers,” he added.
The directive follows a two-day enforcement exercise carried out by the GSA in collaboration with the Police SWAT Team between May 18 and 19, 2026, at Afienya and Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation resulted in the closure of six companies involved in the manufacture of substandard mattresses.
The exercise, led by the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Authority, formed part of compliance measures issued in October 2025, directing the affected companies to halt production until they met the required standards. The firms were subsequently shut down after failing to comply with the directives.
According to the GSA, investigations and laboratory testing of product samples revealed that the companies were using polystyrene materials in mattress production instead of approved materials.
The affected companies include Jin Yuan Jia Mattress Manufacturing Plant, Monda Ghana Mattresses, ZXZ Company Limited, Rockfoam Mattress, and 5A Home Company.
The Authority says it will continue to monitor compliance and take the necessary action to ensure only quality products remain on the market.
