Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has called for patience and protection for rising star Caleb Yirenkyi following the midfielder’s match-winning display in Ghana’s opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Yirenkyi emerged as Ghana’s hero in Toronto, scoring deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama and hand the Black Stars a vital three points in their Group L opener.

The youngster’s impressive performances have continued to attract praise from football fans and pundits alike, with many tipping him as one of the country’s brightest prospects for the future.

Speaking to 3Sports after the game, Ayew lauded the midfielder’s impact since joining the national team but stressed the importance of managing his development carefully.

The veteran forward, who has become one of a select group of Ghanaians to feature at three FIFA World Cup tournaments, believes Yirenkyi possesses immense potential and should be given the support needed to flourish.

“He’s been exceptionally well since coming into the national team. All credit to him, he deserves it, he does his job. He’s a future talent, and we need to protect him to make sure he reaches his full potential,” Ayew said.

Yirenkyi’s winning goal ensured Ghana began their World Cup campaign on a positive note, moving into second place in Group L behind England, who recorded a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening fixture.

The Black Stars will now shift their focus to a highly anticipated clash against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Croatia four days later.

With three points already on the board, Carlos Queiroz’s side will be hoping to build momentum as they pursue a place in the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
