More than 200 homes and shops have been flooded at Kasoa Krispocity in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region following heavy rains that submerged large sections of the community.

Residents blame the recurring flooding on the encroachment of waterways by individuals who have allegedly filled drainage channels with sand and constructed buildings on them.

According to residents, these developments have obstructed the natural flow of water, leaving floodwaters with limited routes during heavy rainfall and worsening the situation in the area.

Frustrated by the persistent flooding, residents are calling on the Municipal Assembly to demolish structures erected on waterways and take punitive action against those responsible.

They also want authorities to invest in improved drainage infrastructure, arguing that the existing drains are too narrow and inadequate to handle the volume of runoff generated during heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, Assembly Member for the Opeikuma–Krispocity Electoral Area, Adams Habibullah, attributed the flooding to widespread construction activities on waterways, stressing the need for stricter enforcement of planning regulations to prevent future disasters.

The Omankrado of Gomoa Kumbe, Nana Abehoadze Prempeh, also appealed to the Assembly to take urgent steps to address the problem and protect residents from further flooding.

The latest flooding incident has renewed concerns about poor drainage systems and unchecked development on waterways, issues residents say continue to put lives and property at risk whenever heavy rains occur.
