Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has expressed strong confidence that Ghana’s Black Stars will head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the belief and quality to compete against any opposition.

Ghana will take part in the 23rd edition of the tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, marking the country’s fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Drawn in a competitive Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, the Black Stars face a demanding path as they seek to improve on recent underwhelming campaigns that ended at the group stage in 2014 and 2022.

But Adams insists the team is not travelling merely to participate, stressing that the squad carries the mentality of contenders rather than outsiders.

“We are not going there as mere participants, but we are going there as a team that is equally capable of winning, whether people believe it or not,” he told TV3.

Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.

The Black Stars will be hoping to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
