Former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, marked his birthday with an act of charity by donating medical supplies and settling the outstanding hospital bills of 15 child patients at the Child Health Department of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Rather than celebrating the occasion with a personal event, the former Education Minister spent the day at the hospital, where he presented a range of essential medical and welfare items to support healthcare delivery for children receiving treatment.

The donation included a hospital stretcher, plastic chairs, tissue papers, diapers, liquid soap, thermometers, a compressor nebulizer, a blood pressure machine, sterilising equipment and other medical supplies needed by the department.

In addition to the items, Dr. Opoku Prempeh paid a total of GH¢43,352 to clear the medical bills of 15 children, providing relief to families facing the financial burden of treatment.

He was welcomed by the Head of the Department of Child Health, Professor Catherine Segbefia, together with hospital administrators, nursing officers and other members of staff.

During the visit, NAPO toured various sections of the department and also visited the Sunshine Hostel, where he interacted with children and their caregivers.

Hospital officials expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as a timely intervention that would support ongoing efforts to provide quality healthcare services to young patients.

Speaking on behalf of the department, Dr. Ernestina Schandorf, Head of the Oncology Unit, said the donation would significantly contribute to patient care and improve the experience of children undergoing treatment.

She also commended Dr. Opoku Prempeh for choosing to celebrate his birthday by supporting vulnerable children rather than focusing on personal festivities.

“We are truly grateful for his thoughtfulness in remembering the children in our care,” she said.

The gesture has been widely praised as an example of using personal milestones to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
