Some 70 private Senior High Schools participating in the Free SHS programme under a pilot arrangement say their operations and preparations for the next academic year are being threatened by the delay in payment of arrears owed them.
They are therefore asking the government to pay them without further delay.
According to the schools, they have not received government’s subsidies meant to cover one hot meal a day for students, as well as other recurring operational expenses, despite services being provided throughout the entire 2025/2026 academic year, which is now drawing to a close.
The Public Relations Officer of the Conference of Heads and Proprietors of Private Secondary Schools (CHOPSS), Naphtali Kyei-Baffour, in an interview with Citi News on Friday, June 5, 2026, said the situation was becoming urgent.
“The academic year is almost ending, and we have not been paid. We look forward to getting something from the government as we prepare for the next academic year,” he said.
The schools say authorities are yet to respond to their concerns.
