Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy, known privately as Livingstone Etse Satekla, has joined calls for an increase in the feeding allowance for inmates in Ghana’s prisons, while donating food items to the Kumasi Central Prisons.
The musician, who observed the rationing of food during a visit to the facility, expressed concern about the conditions under which inmates are fed.
According to him, urgent and deliberate measures are needed to address the situation.

“I was shown the ration they have to take for the afternoon. They are fed with a small amount of money from government, so it is all of us who have to continue to highlight some of these pertinent issues,” he said.
Stonebwoy added that government support needs to be strengthened to meet the humanitarian needs of inmates.
“We pray that government will have the capacity to increase funding and be able to meet the humanitarian needs of the inmates,” he stated.

The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has previously disclosed that government spends about GHS40 million annually on feeding inmates, describing the amount as inadequate. The feeding allowance was recently increased from GHS1.80 to GHS5.00 per inmate per day.
Despite the increment, the Minister maintains that the amount remains insufficient.
Stonebwoy also encouraged greater involvement from the creative arts industry in supporting prison inmates, stressing the need for compassion and solidarity.
“Those of us on the outside should know this is what we live for. We are not going to take anything away from this earth, so we should show love to each other in truth and in genuineness,” he added.

Donation
As part of his visit, the artiste donated food items to the Kumasi Central Prisons as part of his corporate social responsibility initiative.
He said the gesture is not a one-off activity, adding that he intends to continue supporting inmates in future engagements.
The artiste also commended the Ghana Prisons Service for introducing skills training programmes for inmates and expressed willingness to support upcoming Prisons Month activities.
The Commander of the Kumasi Central Prisons, Deputy Director of Prisons James B. Mwinyelle, expressed appreciation for the visit, saying it brought joy to inmates.
He added that the service would explore collaboration with the creative arts department of the Prisons Service and the artiste.
