Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed strong confidence that André Ayew could still feature for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
André Ayew, 36, has been absent from the national team since Ghana’s early exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the Black Stars were eliminated at the group stage.
With head coach Carlos Queiroz preparing to announce his final squad for the global tournament on June 1, Adams believes experience could still play a decisive role, pointing to the fact that older players often remain influential at the highest level.
“Andre Ayew is one of the great players. I have no doubt seeing him at the World Cup because even older players than Andre Ayew go to the World Cup,” he told Adom TV’s Fire-For-Fire.
“I just want results, and I believe that if you have someone like Andre Ayew, it is like having an additional player-coach in the team,” he added.
Ayew, who recently had a short spell with Dutch side NAC Breda, has since been released following the club’s relegation from the top flight, leaving his next move uncertain as the World Cup approaches.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Ahead of the tournament, Queiroz’s side will also step up preparations with friendly matches against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
