The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Asunafo District of the Ahafo Region has raised concern over what it describes as an acute accommodation deficit affecting teachers in both the Asunafo North and Asunafo South Districts.

According to the District GNAT Chairman, Peter Bonsu, the shortage of teacher accommodation in rural communities is negatively affecting teaching and learning, as many teachers are unable to secure decent housing in their posting areas.

Speaking in an interview with ADOM News in Goaso during the one-year anniversary celebration of the Asunafo GNAT Ladies Society (GNATLAS), he explained that the situation is forcing many teachers to endure long and difficult daily commutes.

He noted that teachers in remote communities are often compelled to travel long distances on motorbikes and tricycles, popularly known as “pragya,” a situation he said poses serious safety and health risks.

Mr. Bonsu stressed that the accommodation challenge is affecting motivation and performance, and called on government and local authorities to prioritise the construction of teachers’ quarters, particularly in rural areas.

He argued that addressing the issue would improve teacher retention and enhance the quality of education delivery in the two districts.

Speaking on the theme of the event, “One Year of Unity, Care and Commitment: The Welfare of the Female Teacher for Quality Education,” the GNAT Secretary for the Asunafo Districts, Isaac Ayitey, also highlighted the struggles faced by female teachers.

He said although female teachers continue to contribute significantly to education delivery, many of them are burdened by inadequate accommodation, which affects their daily work.

Mr. Ayitey added that the lack of suitable housing forces some teachers to commute long distances, exposing them to hardship and safety risks, and also called for urgent government intervention.
