The Ghana Immigration Service through the Paga Sector Command has engaged about 400 students of Navrongo Senior High School in a peacebuilding outreach programme following recent student riots recorded in some senior high schools within the Navrongo Municipality.
The engagement was organised in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through its Navrongo Municipal Office.
The programme formed part of the Prevention of Violent Extremism Through Social Accountability (PoVETSA) project being implemented by CRS in collaboration with the National Peace Council and the Kofi Annan International Peace Training Centre (KAIPTC), with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.
The initiative sought to educate students on peaceful conflict resolution, discipline, tolerance and the dangers associated with violence and unrest in schools.
Organisers say the outreach also aimed at promoting dialogue, social accountability and responsible conduct among students to help prevent future disturbances in schools across the municipality.
The programme comes on the back of growing concerns over recent incidents of unrest and riots in some senior high schools in the area.
