The Western North Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concern over what it describes as increasing intimidation and arrests of its communicators and social media activists.
According to the party, recent incidents involving the arrest and questioning of some members are creating a shrinking space for political expression and increasing tension in the country’s democratic environment.
The regional leadership says several communicators and online activists have recently come under scrutiny over comments and social media posts relating to national issues.
It argues that while political engagement can be robust, it should not translate into harassment or attempts to silence dissenting voices.
The party is therefore calling for calm among its members and urging state institutions to remain neutral and apply the law fairly in handling politically related matters.
The NPP in the region further maintains that Ghana’s democracy is founded on free expression and tolerance, warning that any perception of intimidation risks eroding public confidence in state institutions.
Meanwhile, former Suaman District Chief Executive, Philip Kwabena Boahen, has supported the call against alleged intimidation of party communicators.
“These intimidatory tactics will not be tolerated, and history will always judge those who misuse state power against political opponents. Ghana belongs to all of us, and democracy must be protected at all costs,” he said.
He alleged that recent arrests and harassment of party activists are aimed at silencing dissenting voices and urged security agencies to avoid being used as instruments of political persecution.
Mr. Boahen assured party members that the NPP stands firmly behind them, urging them to remain bold, focused, and law-abiding as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
“To all party members across the country, remain bold, courageous, fearless, and focused. Our strength as a party has always been our resilience and unity in difficult times. We must not be discouraged. Rather, we should work even harder, remain law-abiding, and continue engaging the Ghanaian people with discipline and confidence as we prepare towards achieving victory in the 2028 general elections,” he added.
