Developing Women’s Movement (DWM) has marked its 44th anniversary with a renewed commitment to the empowerment, dignity, and advancement of women in Ghana.
The celebration was marked by reflection on the organisation’s decades-long impact in promoting gender equality, leadership, and opportunities for women across the country.
This year’s anniversary also carried a solemn tone following the passing of former First Lady, H. E. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as President of DWM and was widely regarded as a pioneering advocate for women’s empowerment in Ghana.
According to the organisation, her leadership and advocacy helped transform the lives of many women and continues to inspire ongoing efforts toward gender equality.
“Her absence is deeply felt, yet her legacy lives on in every girl who dares to dream bigger, every woman who stands taller in her power, and every community that continues to rise because she believed it was possible,” the statement noted.
Over the past 44 years, DWM says it has remained at the forefront of efforts to challenge inequality, promote women’s leadership, and create opportunities for women in various sectors.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to continuing this mission, stressing that it will build on the foundation laid over the decades.
DWM also used the occasion to call on government to accelerate the implementation of the Affirmative Action law, particularly in education and community structures, to encourage more women to take up leadership roles.
It said stronger implementation would help unlock the potential of competent women to contribute meaningfully to national development.
The movement expressed gratitude to its members, partners, and supporters for their continued commitment and solidarity over the years.
“Together, we will continue to push boundaries, uplift voices, and create a future where every woman and girl thrives,” it said.
The anniversary was marked under the theme of determination and upliftment of women, with renewed calls for unity and sustained advocacy for gender equality.
