Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has expressed confidence that the Black Starlets will respond positively to their opening result at the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite letting a two-goal lead slip against Algeria.
Ghana began their campaign with a 2-2 draw on Thursday at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, in a match that swung dramatically after a dominant first half from the West Africans.
The Black Starlets made a flying start, going into the break 2-0 up thanks to early strikes from Yao Gavi Robinho and Eric Adu Gyamfi.
However, the advantage quickly evaporated after the restart as Algeria mounted a spirited comeback, scoring twice before the 70th minute to level the contest.
The North Africans were later handed a chance to complete the turnaround from the penalty spot, but they squandered the opportunity by firing wide, allowing Ghana to escape with a point.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show after the match, Lamptey remained upbeat about the team’s prospects, insisting they have what it takes to recover strongly in the competition.
“The Black Starlets will bounce back from this disappointing result. We have a good team, and I am confident we will do well,” he said.
Elsewhere in the group, South Africa moved to the top of Group D after defeating Senegal in the other opening fixture.
The Black Starlets now turn their attention to a crucial second group match against Senegal on Sunday, May 17, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT, as they aim to secure their first win of the tournament.
