Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed concern over what he describes as growing intimidation, arrests and harassment of party members under the current administration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia alleged that officers, activists and supporters of the NPP across the country have come under sustained attacks since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025.

“I have observed with great concern the endless assault on the fundamental rights of officers, activists, and supporters of the New Patriotic Party across the country by this NDC government,” he stated.

According to him, arrests, detentions and what he described as “unconscionable bail conditions” have become a persistent feature under the current administration.

Dr. Bawumia cited the alleged arrest and detention of David Essandoh over social media comments on the return of dumsor, as well as the detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye.

“The latest of such acts of intimidation has been the arrest, detention, and subsequent release of David Essandoh for lamenting on social media about the return of dumsor, and the bizarre decision to put the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, into custody,” he said.

He argued that such actions undermine free speech and Ghana’s democratic credentials.

“These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia further condemned what he described as collaboration between the Executive, state investigative agencies and some elements within the judiciary to intimidate opposition members.

“I condemn in the strongest of terms, the unholy collaboration between the Executive, state investigative agencies, and some elements within the judiciary to use intimidation and harassment to silence members of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.

He warned state officials allegedly involved that they would be held accountable for their actions.

“I therefore serve notice to officers of the State who are active participants in this unholy enterprise that the day of accountability will come and the abuse of State power will be accounted for,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia urged NPP supporters to remain firm and continue holding government accountable, stressing that democracy must not be undermined by intimidation.
