Ghanaian middle-distance runner Alex Amankwah has secured a place in the men’s 800m final at the ongoing 2026 Senior Athletics Championships after an impressive performance on the opening day of competition.

Amankwah became the first athlete representing the host nation to qualify for a final at the championships.

The US-based Ghanaian booked his place in the final after finishing third in his heat. Although only the top two athletes earned automatic qualification, Amankwah progressed as one of the fastest losers across the heats.

The men’s 800m final is scheduled for 4:15 pm on Wednesday, May 13.
