The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has declared that the party will strongly respond to what he described as the opposition New Patriotic Party’s “machinery of misinformation, half-baked truths, and calculated propaganda.”

Speaking during the relaunch of the NDC’s “Setting the Records Straight” initiative, Ako Gunn said the party is determined to defend the truth, protect Ghana’s democratic gains, and prevent propaganda from misleading Ghanaians.

“We are here to reaffirm a political responsibility to defend truth, protect our democratic gains, and ensure that propaganda does not distort the will of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.

According to him, the NPP has once again resorted to what he described as a deliberate political strategy aimed at manipulating public perception and rewriting history following what he called the party’s poor record in government.

“Let me state this clearly from the outset: the NPP has once again activated its well-known machinery of misinformation, half-baked truths, and calculated propaganda. This is not new,” he stressed.

Ako Gunn recalled that after the first NDC administration under former President Jerry John Rawlings, the government of former President John Agyekum Kufuor allegedly distorted the achievements of the NDC through sustained propaganda.

He noted that the then Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, now General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, introduced the “Setting the Records Straight” platform to counter those narratives.

“That initiative was not just political communication; it was a rescue mission for truth. It helped restore public confidence and ultimately contributed to regaining power,” he said.

Ako Gunn argued that the NDC lost power in 2016 not because of poor performance but because it failed to aggressively counter propaganda.

“In 2016, the NDC lost power not because of a lack of performance, but because of a failure to aggressively confront propaganda,” he stated.

He highlighted several achievements under previous NDC administrations, including Ghana’s transition from a HIPC economy to a lower middle-income country, major road projects, the construction of Community Day Senior High Schools, and infrastructure projects such as Terminal 3 of the Kotoka International Airport and the expansion of the Kumasi International Airport.

According to him, those achievements were overshadowed by what he described as fabricated stories and propaganda campaigns.

“Today, the same playbook is being deployed,” he alleged.

He accused the NPP of spreading misinformation about institutions and government policies, including claims surrounding GoldBod, COCOBOD, and allegations that state funds were used to purchase four aircraft for President John Dramani Mahama.

“They have even gone as far as alleging that public funds have been used to purchase four aircraft for the President — a claim that is not only palpably false but highly irresponsible,” he said.

Ako Gunn also defended the Bank of Ghana over its reported 15 billion cedis intervention, insisting it should be viewed as a strategic investment aimed at stabilising the economy.

He said the intervention had contributed to “a more stable macroeconomic environment, lower debt-to-GDP, reduced inflation, eased cost-of-living pressures, and a stronger national currency.”

He dismissed claims by the NPP that the Bank of Ghana had recorded a 44 billion cedis loss, describing them as “unsubstantiated and pure propaganda.”

He further commended the Minister for Government Communications for the “Accounting to the People” series but stressed that political misinformation required a stronger political response.

“That is why ‘Setting the Records Straight’ is back,” he declared.

He maintained that while the NDC welcomes constructive criticism, it would not allow what he described as deliberate falsehoods and character assassination to go unanswered.

“Every lie will be confronted with facts. Every distortion will be corrected with evidence,” he emphasised.

Ako Gunn called on party executives and supporters to remain united and disciplined as the party continues its reorganisation efforts.

“From today, ‘Setting the Records Straight’ becomes a continuous, strategic, and uncompromising platform. We will speak. We will correct. We will defend the truth every single day,” he concluded.
