The Ga Traditional Council has expressed support for Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo following public backlash over her comments relating to staff postings to parts of Northern Ghana.
In a statement, the Council said it had taken note of the widespread discussions triggered by the Minister’s remarks, which were interpreted by some sections of the public, particularly from the Northern Regions, as inappropriate.
However, the Council believes the comments were not intended to insult or undermine the dignity of people from the North. It explained that public officials often operate in fast-paced and demanding environments where expressions may sometimes be misunderstood or may not fully reflect intended meaning.
According to the Council, the Minister’s remarks are better understood as an unfortunate lapse in communication rather than a deliberate attempt to show disrespect.
It further commended Linda Ocloo for publicly clarifying her comments and expressing remorse over the misunderstanding and concerns generated by the situation.
The Ga Traditional Council also extended an apology to individuals who may have felt offended or marginalised, stressing that Ghana’s unity is built on respect for diversity and equal recognition of all regions.
It appealed for calm, forgiveness, and reconciliation, urging the public and opinion leaders to avoid escalating tensions over what it described as an isolated communication lapse.
The Council reiterated that every region in Ghana plays a vital role in national development and should be treated with equal respect and dignity.
It further called on leaders and citizens to remain focused on strengthening national unity, inclusiveness, and shared progress, while promoting peaceful dialogue in addressing public concerns.
