Suame Member of Parliament and Legal Counsel for the Minority Caucus, John Darko, has criticised the now-defunct Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) initiative, describing it as unconstitutional, rushed and lacking a proper legal foundation.
He argued that the committee was flawed from the outset, insisting that a president-elect does not have the constitutional mandate to establish an investigative body to probe individuals.
According to him, the process reflected what he considers an attempt to advance a politically driven agenda without the necessary legal backing.
Mr Darko also questioned the overall impact of the initiative, stating that despite the attention it generated, it failed to produce any meaningful results. He added that several claims linked to ORAL were overstated and ultimately amounted to little substance.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, he said, “My position from day one was that even the establishment of that so-called ORAL was illegal.”
He further stressed that, “a president-elect, by no powers in our Constitution or any of our laws, has the power to set up a committee to investigate people.”
Mr Darko also dismissed suggestions that the initiative led to the recovery of large sums of money, arguing that it generated “just noise” rather than tangible outcomes.
