The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned schools across the country against charging unauthorised fees, stressing that no institution has been approved to impose such levies on students or parents.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday, May 6, GES clarified that it has “not authorised or sanctioned any school to charge fees, under any name or in any form, from students or parents,” and urged the public to disregard reports suggesting otherwise.

The caution follows growing concerns and social media reports alleging that some schools have introduced additional charges, including feeding fees.

GES described such claims as misleading and stated that any school found engaging in the practice would be acting unlawfully.

“Any school found to be charging money under the guise of feeding fees, as alleged, is acting unlawfully and without the approval of Management,” the statement said.

The Service further reaffirmed government’s commitment to the Free Senior High School policy, describing it as a major intervention aimed at eliminating financial barriers to secondary education.

According to GES, the policy remains fully operational, with continuous efforts being made to sustain and improve its implementation.

Authorities further warned that any attempt to weaken the policy—whether through misinformation or illegal charges—would not be tolerated and would be treated as contrary to the national interest.

Parents and students have been encouraged to report any such demands directly to GES for swift investigation and possible disciplinary action.
