Despite renewed conflict and security concerns in the municipality, the Nkwanta South Education Directorate has organised an English Quiz for Junior High School students to strengthen reading culture and improve academic standards.

The competition, dubbed the Unity English Quiz, was sponsored by the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly under the leadership of Municipal Chief Executive Joseph Awal Antwi, with support from the Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Kini.

The initiative forms part of efforts to address declining academic performance, particularly at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level.

Schools that qualified for the final stage included Nkwanta Kyabobo Girls JHS, Nkwanta St. Theresa’s JHS, Emmanuel Preparatory School, Nkwanta M/A JHS “A,” and Adom Model School.

After closely contested rounds, Nkwanta M/A JHS “A” emerged as overall winners with 64 points.

Adom Model JHS placed second, while Emmanuel Preparatory School took third place.

In an interview with Adom News, MP Geoffrey Kini said the quiz is a timely intervention, noting that recurring conflict has disrupted learning and affected academic performance as well as economic activity.

He stressed that supporting schools with basic needs and academic programmes can help restore momentum in education, adding that education remains one of his key priorities.

The MP also appealed to residents to promote peace to enable development.

MCE Joseph Awal Antwi reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to improving educational infrastructure and sustaining academic programmes.

He described the Unity English Quiz as an ongoing municipal initiative aimed at reversing the decline in BECE results in recent years, adding that more education-focused activities will be rolled out to encourage both learners and educators, even amid current challenges.
