Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe, says Ghana’s success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup should be measured by progression beyond the group stage.
The former administrator believes the Ghana national football team can consider their campaign successful if they advance from Group L, where they have been drawn alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
Ghana, who have struggled to move past the group phase in recent editions of the tournament, exited at that stage in both 2014 and 2022.
Pappoe insists that breaking that pattern would represent meaningful progress.
“I will consider success if Ghana is able to go the next round of the World Cup, and with how the tournament has been structured, a win will see us through to the next round,” he told Sporty FM.
The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Ahead of the tournament, Carlos Queiroz’s side is expected to step up preparations with friendly matches against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
The final squad for the global showpiece is set to be announced on June 1.
