Nigerian actress Oby Kechere, widely remembered for her role as “Ms Koi Koi” in the 2002 comedy classic Aki na Ukwa, has died.

Her passing was confirmed on Saturday by Uche Agbo, National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria.

According to the Guild, Kechere died on April 27, 2026, following a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Guild, Agbo described her death as a painful loss to the industry. He noted that Kechere, who served as Vice Chairman of the DGN Abuja Chapter, was a dedicated professional whose impact on the Guild and the broader Nollywood community would be long remembered.

The statement highlighted her commitment to fostering unity within the Guild and acknowledged her contributions to the growth of the Abuja Chapter.

Kechere was a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan and began her acting career in 2001, gaining early recognition through roles in the popular “August Meeting” film series.

She was a native of Mbaise in Imo State, Nigeria.

Condolences have been extended to her family, colleagues, and loved ones, as tributes continue to pour in for the late actress.
