The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has initiated discussions with key stakeholders to develop a tailored social security scheme for commercial motorcycle riders and informal sector transport workers.

The engagement brought together officials from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and leadership of the Okada Riders Association Ghana to explore ways of extending pension coverage to a largely underserved segment of the workforce.

The proposed framework is aimed at providing long-term income security and retirement protection for riders and other informal transport operators, many of whom currently operate outside formal social security systems.

The discussions focused on designing a flexible and accessible scheme that aligns with the unique working conditions of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as okada operators.

Officials emphasised that the goal is to build a system where no worker is left behind, especially those in the informal economy who remain vulnerable without structured retirement plans.

If implemented, the initiative is expected to mark a significant step toward expanding Ghana’s social security coverage and improving financial security for informal sector workers.

SSNIT said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote inclusivity and ensure that all workers, regardless of sector, have access to sustainable social protection.
