A grieving father, Sampson Ansong, has recounted the painful moments leading to the death of his pregnant daughter, Abigail Opoku, at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, raising concerns over alleged delays in performing a life-saving caesarean section.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Ansong said he received a distressing call from his wife late at night, urging him to pray for their daughter as her condition had become critical.
“I was home around 10 p.m. when my wife called and told me to intensify prayers for my daughter because it was a critical point. I became very worried and rushed straight to the hospital,” he recounted.
He said he left home in a hurry without informing anyone and drove directly to the facility, only to be met with devastating news.
“When I got there, I was told my daughter had died,” he said.
According to him, medical staff did not immediately disclose the death to his wife. Instead, she was asked to leave the ward under the pretext of going to purchase medication.
“They couldn’t even tell my wife. They asked her to go and buy medicine, so she wasn’t in the ward when I got there. I heard the news before her,” he added.
Mr Ansong said he later sought answers from health personnel about what may have led to his daughter’s death.
“I asked, and they told me she became weak and the time for delivery had passed. Her urine had turned yellow, and there was blood coming from her mouth,” he said.
He further revealed that Abigail had been referred from a private facility in Kasoa with instructions for an emergency caesarean section, but he does not understand why the procedure was delayed.
“She was transferred from a clinic, and the directive was for a CS to be carried out. So I don’t know why they delayed for her to lose her life,” he lamented.
Mr Ansong said he eventually returned home in the early hours of the morning, struggling to come to terms with the loss.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service in the Central Region has initiated a probe into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Health authorities say the investigation will establish the facts, including whether there were lapses in clinical care, referral procedures, or emergency response at the facility.
The case has reignited public concern over maternal healthcare delivery and emergency obstetric care, particularly in high-risk cases requiring timely surgical intervention.
