Former Black Stars defender Daniel Opare remains confident that Ghana can spring a surprise at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite doubts surrounding the team’s recent performances.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama for the tournament, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana’s build-up has, however, been disrupted by a poor run of results that led to the dismissal of Otto Addo and the appointment of former Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz, who is now leading preparations for the global showpiece.

Despite the turbulence, Opare, speaking to Joy Sports, insists the team still has the potential to compete strongly if the right mindset is maintained.

“This is football, anything can happen,” he said.

“They can really surprise us. Sometimes, it takes an individual to change the whole game.

“If they keep up with the mentality of ‘we’re here to play, win, build ourselves’, with that one spirit, I think they are capable,” he added.

Queiroz is expected to submit his final squad for the expanded 48-team tournament by June 1.

As part of their preparations, Ghana will face Mexico on May 22 before taking on Wales on June 2.

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before meeting England on June 23 and wrapping up their group-stage matches against Croatia on June 27.
