Security analyst Paul Boateng has cautioned that increasing military presence in Bawku and surrounding communities will not provide a lasting solution to the protracted conflict in the area.
According to him, while the deployment of soldiers may temporarily suppress violence, it does not address the underlying causes of the crisis.
“When the military moves in, people will only run into their rooms and hide, but that will not solve the problem. The Bawku conflict requires sustained dialogue, mediation, and long-term solutions, not only military deployment,” he stated.
His comments follow a recent incident involving the Ghana Armed Forces, which confirmed that an escort convoy protecting civilians was attacked by unknown gunmen at Binduri.
In a statement signed by Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, the military said the attack occurred on Monday, April 27, 2026, when a convoy transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga came under heavy gunfire.
The military reported that three civilians were killed and one other injured during the attack. Soldiers escorting the convoy returned fire, repelling the assailants and killing seven of them.
Weapons and ammunition, including a G3 rifle, loaded magazines, and additional rounds, were also retrieved from a suspect who allegedly fled into a mosque during the operation.
Reacting to the development, Mr Boateng expressed concern over the proliferation of arms in the conflict zone, warning that Ghana’s porous borders make it easier for weapons to enter the area.
“There is still no real peace in Bawku. If anyone thinks there is peace there, then we are deceiving ourselves,” he said.
He also questioned the effectiveness of ongoing mediation efforts, including those led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, noting that the Bawku conflict differs from the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute between the Abudu and Andani gates.
“The Bawku situation is different. Peace will only come when the people themselves decide to allow peace to prevail,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces say 21 suspects have so far been arrested to assist with investigations into the recent attacks and disturbances in the area.
