President of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), John Ansah, has pushed back against criticism of the Ghana Premier League, insisting the domestic topflight remains one of the strongest competitions on the African continent.
His comments come amid renewed debate over the composition of the Black Stars squad following the appointment of Carlos Queiroz ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Discussions have intensified around the need to create space for more home-based players in the national team setup.
At present, Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is the only locally based player in the senior national team, a situation that has fuelled calls for greater inclusion of domestic talents.
Speaking on the status of the local league, Ansah dismissed claims that it falls below continental standards, arguing that it remains competitive despite room for improvement.
“The local league, sometimes we complain about not being the best. If you look around us on this continent, we are among the best, and so I think there is so much room for improvement,” Mr Ansah told Citi Sports.
Meanwhile, Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has been monitoring local talent closely, attending friendly matches involving the Black Galaxies against Heart of Lions and Aduana Stars as part of his assessment process.
Queiroz is expected to name Ghana’s final squad for the World Cup on June 1, as preparations intensify for the global tournament scheduled for later this summer.
