Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz has described his appointment as head coach of Ghana national football team as both a privilege and a deeply personal milestone.

The 73-year-old replaces Otto Addo on a short-term four-month contract and is tasked with leading Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup later this year.

Queiroz was officially unveiled on Thursday in Accra at the Alisa Hotel, shortly after being introduced to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, at the Sports Ministry.

Speaking at the unveiling, the experienced Portuguese tactician expressed heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting his emotional connection to the African continent.

“I just want to say thank you. I just want to express how I feel inside my heart now,” Queiroz said.

“To be part of Ghana’s sports and family is a privilege and honour for me. I know that some of you know that I have strong African roots.

“I was born and raised in Mozambique, and so leading Ghana, an African country, to the World Cup is unforgettable and a memory in my life,” the former Real Madrid head coach added.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, face a stern test in Group L, where they will come up against England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After disappointing group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, expectations are mounting for a stronger performance this time, with Queiroz charged with guiding the four-time African champions beyond the early stages.
