Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has strongly criticised the governing body over its decision to convert the official residence of the Black Stars head coach into a technical directorate office.
The controversy follows revelations by a Senior Communications Officer of the GFA, Sheikh Tophic Sienu, that the five-bedroom property in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, previously reserved for the national team coach, has been repurposed for administrative use.
The development has triggered widespread debate, with sections of the public urging authorities to ensure newly appointed Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is allocated the facility instead.
However, the move has received backing from GFA Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo, who defended the decision in an interview with Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.
Afriyie, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, did not hold back in his response, describing the decision as unacceptable and condemning those who support it.
“You have the Ghana Football Association (GFA) headquarters at Osu, while the technical centre is in Prampram,” he said.
“The Black Stars coach’s residence, located in a prime area like the Airport residential area, and it cannot be used as a technical directorate. There was a reason why the government decided to get a house for the Black Stars coach, and so this decision is wrong.
“You will be foolish to defend the Ghana Football Association’s decision to use Black Stars coach’s official residence as a technical directorate office, and anyone who defends this act is foolish. I stand by my words,” Mr Afriyie added.
Reports indicate that Queiroz, who has signed a short-term four-month contract, is expected to stay in a hotel ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The development adds another layer to ongoing discussions about the management of national team resources and preparations for the global tournament.
