The Director of Communications at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Paa Kwesi Schandorf, has said residents in communities around the Damang Mine should expect increased development and job opportunities following its takeover by Engineers and Planners (E&P).

The transition, formalised at a ceremony at the mining site, is being described as a significant step towards boosting local participation in Ghana’s extractive sector.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Mr Schandorf stressed that the benefits of the takeover must go beyond infrastructure to include meaningful employment for people within the enclave.

“Locals in that area should expect maximum employment considerations,” he said.

He explained that current mining regulations require companies to prioritise development in host communities, noting that residents should begin to see improvements in education, road networks and other key infrastructure.

According to him, government and sector authorities will ensure that communities are not shortchanged in the process.

Mr Schandorf also addressed discussions around a proposed airport project in the area, stating that its feasibility would depend on available resources, but expressed confidence in E&P’s capacity to deliver.

The takeover has been welcomed by stakeholders, including businessman Ibrahim Mahama, who described it as evidence that Ghanaian firms are capable of managing and investing in the country’s natural resources.
