The Member of Parliament for Akrofuom , Joseph Azumah, has expressed disappointment in the position taken by the MP for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, regarding government support for fans to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mr. Agbana had called on the government to prioritise the development of sports infrastructure instead of spending public funds to sponsor football supporters to the tournament, scheduled to take place from June 9 to July 19.

He argued that using state resources to transport fans would impose an unnecessary financial burden on the country while benefiting only a small group of people.

However, Mr. Azumah, speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM, said he disagrees with that position, stressing that the national team needs visible support from fans at international competitions.

“I have heard some arguments that the government does not have to spend money on sending fans abroad to support the Black Stars during the World Cup. I am against it. I am disappointed in Edem Agbana. Why should he say the government should not sponsor anybody?” he questioned.

Mr. Azumah insisted that government support for travelling supporters is important and should not be dismissed entirely.

“We must send supporters, and the government must ensure that at all cost,” he added.

He acknowledged that it may not be possible to sponsor large numbers of people but suggested that a modest arrangement could still ensure national representation in the stands.

“I agree that we cannot send everyone, but at least if it is two or three people each from the constituencies, for instance, it is fair,” he explained.

He emphasised that the presence of supporters at major tournaments contributes to national pride and boosts the morale of players representing the country on the global stage.
